In 2011 the airport was renamed in honor of Ferenc Liszt on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of his birth. In 2013, the airport handled 8.5 million passengers. It was the hub for MalĂ©v until the airline’s bankruptcy in 2012.
Aviation started at the airport in 1943.
