Virgin America

Virgin America is an American airline founded in 2004 and began operations in 2007. It is currently a brand name operated by the Alaska Air Group and flown by former Virgin America crew and aircraft.
When it operated as a standalone airline, the company used San Francisco International Airport and Los Angeles International Airport as its main hubs. The airline primarily operated between its California hubs and major metropolitan cities. The airline had problems upon startup due to questions about foreign ownership and control, which is limited by American law. The company’s brand name was licensed from the United Kingdom Virgin Group, which also controls the brand of the Virgin Atlantic and Virgin Australia airlines.
The Alaska Air Group acquired Virgin America in 2016. The company is currently operating Virgin America as a separate airline and a sister carrier to the company’s other subsidiaries, Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air. The Alaska Air Group plans to fully merge Virgin America’s operations into Alaska Airlines by April 2018, at which time they will be single airline.
