US Airways logoUS Airways is a major U.S. airline owned by the American Airlines Group. It operates an extensive international and domestic network. The airline is an affiliate member of Oneworld.
US Airways traces its history to All American Aviation. Headquartered in Pittsburgh, the airline served the Ohio River valley in 1939. In 1949 the company was renamed All American Airways as it switched from airmail to passenger service; it becameĀ Allegheny Airlines in 1953. In 1979, Allegheny Airlines changed its name to USAir and began seeking to expand its operations. A decade later, it had acquired Piedmont Airlines and Pacific Southwest Airlines and was one of the U.S.’s seven remaining transcontinental legacy carriers.InĀ  1997, the airline changed its name to US Airways. In 2005, America West Airlines carried out a reverse merger, acquiring the assets and branding of the larger US Airways. In 2013, American Airlines and US Airways announced plans to merge, creating the largest airline in the world. US Airways left Star Alliance to join Oneworld in 2014. The combined airline will carry the American Airlines name and branding, and will maintain the existing US Airways hubs in Charlotte, Philadelphia, and Phoenix for a period of at least five years.
