Amsterdam Schiphol logoAmsterdam Airport Schiphol is the main international airport of the Netherlands. It is the 4th busiest airport in Europe and the world’s 14th in terms of passenger traffic (52.5 million passengers passed through the airport in 2013). Schiphol is the primary hub for KLM. The airport also serves as a European hub for Delta Air Lines and as a base for easyJet and Vueling.
Schiphol opened in 1916 as a military airbase. Civil aircraft started to use the field in 1920. The Fokker aircraft manufacturer started a factory near Schiphol airport in 1919. The end of the First World War also saw the beginning of civilian use of Schiphol Airport and the airport eventually lost its military role completely.
