Turkish Airlines is the national flag carrier airline of Turkey. It operates scheduled services to a large number of international and domestic cities. The airline’s main base is at Ataturk International Airport. The airline has been a member of the Star Alliance network since 2008.
The airline was formed in 1933 and started its first international services in 1947. However, domestic services remained the airline’s main focus until the 1960s. In 1983 a new government came to power which recognized Turkish Airlines importance as Turkey’s ambassador to the world, beginning the airline’s make-over into a modern operation. It would maintain one of the youngest fleets in the world. In 1996 the domestic market was deregulated, allowing new scheduled competition from charter airlines.
